Buildings and Grounds
The Montville Township Public Schools' buildings and grounds department operates with a dedicated team of more than 55 skilled professionals in custodial, maintenance, and groundskeeping roles. Together, they are responsible for the upkeep of impressive educational and administrative spaces spanning over 348,000 square feet on 152-acres that include numerous athletic facilities.
In addition to housing over 3,500 students and over 600 faculty and staff, the district's seven school buildings are utilized yearlong by the Montville Township community.
By diligently maintaining the school buildings and meticulously caring for the surrounding grounds, the department plays a crucial role in supporting the educational mission of the district.
Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA)
As part of the plan to keep the members of the Montville Township Public Schools community aware of the information regarding updates in our District asbestos management plans, which are mandated by the Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA) signed into law by President Reagan in December 1987, this letter is being issued.
As required by AHERA law, an accredited management planner prepared an asbestos management plan four our school buildings. This plan was submitted and accepted by the New Jersey Department of Health. Initial inspections indicated that asbestos containing building materials (ACBM) are present in our buildings.
Inspection of all areas identified in the plan, whether ACBM or assumed ACBM, are being inspected at least every six months.
As required by AHERA law since July of 1989, our District has performed three (3) year re-inspections. The school building was inspected an a letter of assurance was sent to the New Jersey Department of Health confirming our compliance with AHERA regulations.
Our district custodians and maintenance staff have had an asbestos awareness training course and have been instructed on the importance of periodically surveying the asbestos materials during their normal day to day activities.
The asbestos management plan, previous three year re-inspection, six month periodic surveillance reports and any abatement records are available for review during office hours Monday through Friday in the Board of Education Office.
Annual Integrated Pest Management Notices
The district has adopted an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Policy and has implemented an IPM Plan to comply with the New Jersey School Integrated Pest Management Act. IPM is a holistic, preventive approach to managing pests that is explained further in the IPM Policy included in the annual notification letters.
Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) Measurement Reports
Electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lights, as well as cell phones and other electronic devices. Due to overhead power lines behind the west side of Robert R. Lazar Middle School, the district conducts EMF testing.
Lead in Water Test Results
As required by law, districtwide sampling of the water in all seven schools and the Board of Education offices took place on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
The water sampling procedure was carried out by EMSL Analytical, Inc. in accordance with the technical guidance that was provided by the State of New Jersey. All drinking water and food preparation outlets were tested. All of the samples in Cedar Hill, Hilldale, Valley View, William Mason, Woodmont, Robert R. Lazar Middle School, Montville Township High School, and the Board of Education Offices tested below the lead action level established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for lead in drinking water (15 µg/l [ppb]).
For more information on reducing lead exposure around your home and the health effects of lead, visit EPA's Web site at www.epa.gov/lead, call the National Lead Information Center at 800-424-LEAD, or contact your health care provider.
If you are concerned about lead exposure at our school facilities or in your home, you may want to ask your health care providers about testing children to determine levels of lead in their blood.
