The heroic and life-saving actions of Lori Polifante were recognized by the Montville Township Board of Education [BOE] on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
In January, Polifante, a Cedar Hill Elementary School secretary, performed the Heimlich maneuver to remove an obstruction from the airway of a choking student.
“We would like to formally recognize Lori for her courageous efforts and her response in this critical moment, which underscores the invaluable role she plays in our school community,” said Superintendent Thomas Gorman.
Gorman began the recognition of Polifante by explaining that, “During the school day, Lori noticed that a student was choking and immediately responded by performing the Heimlich maneuver. Thanks to her quick thinking and training, Lori successfully cleared the obstruction, preventing what could have been a tragic outcome. Lori’s composure under pressure and commitment to the well-being of our students exemplify the highest standards of care and professionalism. Her actions serve as a testament to the importance of preparedness and the dedication of our school staff to ensuring a safe environment for all.”
Polifante expressed her gratitude for the training that gave her the skills and confidence to take action in a moment of crisis.
“While I am honored to be acknowledged for my actions that day,” Polifante said. “The true reward is knowing that I was able to make a positive impact on someone’s life.”
Polifante credited co-workers past and present, as well as Cedar Hill Principal Dr. Michael Raj and School Nurse Bonnie Lee DiCola, for prioritizing, and annually making available, life-saving training.
“To everyone here tonight,” Polifante added, “I encourage you to take the time to learn basic life-saving skills. You never know when you might be in a position to save someone’s life.”
Noting that she will always hold in her heart the child she saved with the Heimlich maneuver, Polifante explained, “I am so thankful for the positive outcome that day…. This experience has taught me that the true value of life lies in the moment that we step up and act – not just for ourselves, but for each other.”
Polifante received a standing ovation from the Montville Township Board of Education, Montville Township Public Schools [MTPS] administration and faculty, and many of the members of the community who were in attendance at the February 4, 2025, BOE meeting.
