In the spring of 2023, Lazar 8th Grade student Audriana Giudice submitted her poem, about the power of words, to the John Estey Student Writing Competition sponsored by the American Writers Museum [AWM]. Giudice was encouraged by Lazar English teacher, Suezette Given, to submit the poem.

In the spring of 2023, Lazar 8th Grade student Audriana Giudice submitted her poem, about the power of words, to the John Estey Student Writing Competition sponsored by the American Writers Museum [AWM]. Giudice was encouraged by Lazar English teacher, Suezette Given, to submit the poem.

Giudice, who is now an MTHS 9th grade student, was notified at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year that she had received the John Estey Student Writing Award in the middle school category. 

In 2021, teacher Suezette Given received the AWM OnWord Inspiration Award for the inspiration she provided to author Jenny Xie as a student. Since then Given has worked with the AWM to raise awareness of writing and the impact of inspiring young writers. In 2022 Alessandra Giordano of Lazar, now an MTHS sophomore, received the AWM middle school award.
